My Research to Write this Mondly Review

Before I share my experience with Mondly, let me explain why you can trust my take on it.

I’m an English teacher in Spain who’s actively learning languages. So, I know what makes a good learning tool – both from teaching others and from my own studies.

My years teaching and learning languages have shown me what methods get real results. I’ve seen which approaches work in the classroom and in personal study, and I’ve applied these insights to my review of Mondly.

This is an updated version of the review I wrote for 2024. I’m committed to keeping my reviews up to date, and language apps evolve quickly. So, I want to make sure you have current information to work with.

What Is Mondly and How Does It Work?

Mondly is a popular language learning app launched in 2014 as Mondly Languages. It joined the education company Pearson in 2022 and is now branded as ‘Mondly by Pearson ‘.

Available Languages and Learning Options

Mondly’s tagline is to learn “41 languages from your native language. Anytime, anywhere, on any device.” 125 million users do just that.

Mondly Homepage

41 languages is impressive, but it’s not just a platform for native English speakers. There are over 1,000 language combinations from different native languages. However, this is similar to other apps like Duolingo, so let’s see what else Mondly offers.

Lessons include 50 topics to build your grammar and vocabulary. There are also 41 conversations using everyday scenarios to help you improve fluency activities.

Mondly uses AI-driven chatbots and offers additional apps using AR and VR technologies. This creates personalised and interactive learning situations. But I will look at the technology side of things later in this review and show how it can help you learn a language.

The full suite of Mondly products, which is included in all subscriptions, is:

Mondly, Mondly Kids, Mondly AR and Mondly VR

These are available as separate apps, but Mondly By Pearson for Business is also included in the main app. This focuses on vocabulary and business skills in a wide range of industries (airline, hospitality, healthcare, etc.).

Mondly Lessons

But before I go into more detail, how much will Mondly cost you?

Mondly Subscription Plans and Pricing

Mondly is very well priced. In terms of what you get, it’s excellent value for money. Especially when compared with other language learning platforms.

Mondly Price Plan EUR

Subscription Options

All of Mondly’s paid plans give you access to the premium plan, which includes all 41 languages, and are priced as follows:

  • 1 Month = $11.99 / €9.99 / £9.99
  • 12 Month = $69.99 / €47.99 / £59.99
  • Lifetime Access = $149.99 / €99.99 / £129.99

The monthly plan is good if you are on a budget or unsure whether to commit to the full year. It allows you to try all the premium features to see if the platform meets your needs.

If you are super motivated, the annual subscription offers better value for money. All plans provide access to every language, so you can change to another language anytime.

You can then sign up for a lifetime offer for a little extra. This is a one-time payment of as low as €99.99, which is an excellent price for what it provides.

How Mondly Compares to Other Popular Language Apps

I will look at each of these language-learning apps in more detail in future posts. But to give you a quick price comparison to show where Mondly sits in the market:

  • Duolingo: $12/month
  • Babbel: $15.33/mo
  • Busuu: $15/mo
  • Memrise: $26.99/mo

Can You Use Mondly to Learn a Language for Free?

The free plan with Mondly is more of a sample or trial run. It gives you access to the platform so you can see the interactive dashboard and the features included in the app.

Mondly Learning Path

From there, you can look around, and the first thing you will notice is the pleasant user experience.

You have access to the first block of lessons. This is the ‘Hello’ category, which has eight lessons, Daily Lessons, and the Chatbot feature.

This is a limited free version, but it contains enough material to help you understand the language app’s offerings. To unlock all content, you must choose a paid plan.

Choosing Your Target Language

The 41 languages available include popular ones like Spanish, French, German, etc. However, Mondly also offers less common languages like Catalan, Urdu, and Tagalog.

Mondly Language Selection

Mondly is not only for English-speaking learners. You can set your native language to one of 33 options.

As I live in Spain and am fluent in Spanish, I decided to test the app with its Spanish program. In addition, I looked at German, which is completely new to me. This allowed me to also experience the lessons on Mondly as a complete beginner.

First Impressions of the Mondly App

My first impression is that the platform is user-friendly and visually pleasing. I’ve used other language apps that did not have the best user experience, but Mondly feels and looks great. Starting with the desktop version, you have clear icons on the home screen for different lessons. And there is a literal learning path to follow.

There are 40 units on the map, ranging from ‘Food & Drinks’ to ‘Past Experiences’. But the logical starting point is the first unit, ‘Hello’.

There is another navigation menu on the home screen, with a list view of the lesson and their contents. You also have the ‘Statistics Chart’, ‘Leaderboard’, and ‘Shop’ here.

The mobile app feels great, too, and is just as user-friendly. You can download it from the Apple Store, Google Play Store, or Huawei AppGallery.

Mondly Mobile App

The home screen is identical to the web version. The layout and menus are spacious, so don’t feel overcrowded on the smaller screen.

To sum up, I was very impressed with the ease of use of both the web and mobile versions.

Top marks for layout and user experience.

Key Features for Language Learners

Now that I’ve set myself up on Mondly and investigated the main page, let’s take a closer look at the features.

Core Mondly Lessons

Each unit on the Mondly navigation map has six lessons, one conversation exercise, and a vocabulary section.

The questions vary from translations and gap-fill sentences to matching vocabulary words to pictures. The focus is a combination of learning vocabulary, phrases, and listening.

As you would expect, you start with basic vocabulary in the early units and progress from there. The exercises reinforce new words by spaced repetition, which helps retain new vocabulary. And each unit has handy vocabulary builders to review the words you’ve learned.

The voice recordings are of excellent audio quality. It is a native speaker with an authentic accent and pronunciation. This is a valuable feature of the app, as it allows you to mimic their pronunciation.

Mondly Daily Lesson

There are also daily lessons for you to do, adding the gamified aspect to the app. If you do one of these lessons every day for a week, you can take the weekly quiz. You then have the option to do a monthly challenge if you successfully complete everything that month.

Mondly VR and Advanced Features

Mondly has incorporated technology into the platform to make it interactive.

Using an app to learn a language is always limited to an extent. They are great for learning vocabulary and phrases and useful for memory retention. But they don’t give you real-life communication practice.

Mondly has tried to bridge this gap using technology. They have created Mondly VR (virtual reality) and Mondy AR (augmented reality). The idea is to create an immersive environment to replicate conversation practice.

Mondly AR App

You need a VR headset to use the virtual reality feature. However, the AR feature is accessible by downloading the free Mondly AR app on your smartphone.

The other great feature of the main app is the Chatbot. Artificial intelligence technology allows you to simulate a two-way conversation. It provides suggested responses, and you record your voice response.

The technology used here is more advanced than other apps. I’ve used programs where you can say almost anything, and the app accepts it. However, Mondly is quite strict with the pronunciation, which is great.

Mondly Chatbot

It will also play back the entire conversation you’ve recorded, allowing you to hear your responses. Recording and listening to your own voice is an undervalued exercise when learning a language. It can work wonders for your pronunciation.

Personalisation

You have three starting levels: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.

From what I can see, the courses are very similar—you have the same 40 units to study. So, the different levels don’t change the content, but the format of questions differs.

Looking at the Spanish language topics, they don’t get too advanced. The grammar and vocabulary are around a high intermediate level. However, this is where language apps serve best. For higher levels, you need human interaction and conversation. A learning process using more real-world materials. So, I think the app fulfils its purpose.

Progress Tracking

The progress tracker is straightforward. At the bottom of the screen, there is a menu where you can select ‘Lesson’, ‘Statistics’, or ‘Leaderboard’.

Mondly Statistics Screen

You can see how long you’ve been studying and the number of words and phrases you’ve learned in the Statistics tab. This also shows you the number of days you’ve studied in a row.

The leaderboard gives you your global score and allows you to compete against friends. However, unlike other apps, this is more of an extra feature than the main focus.

The leaderboard allows you to compete against friends and other users. At the same time, the lessons tab gives you a clearer view of your learning progress. This includes a collapsible menu for each unit. So you can see exactly where you are at a glance.

Mondly’s Learning Method

Although the user experience and visual aspects are great, how does it compare to traditional language lessons?

Teaching Approach

Mondy’s teaching approach combines traditional textbook methods with advanced learning technologies. So, what does this mean for the learner?

You have between 8 and 30 questions per lesson, which vary in format. They focus on vocabulary, phrases and sentence structure.

Mondly German Lesson

For vocabulary, you must match new words to their picture and translation. Another question could be to translate sentences from your mother tongue to the language you’re learning. And vice versa. Then, gap-fill exercises: write what you hear or order the words in a sentence.

Regarding the content, Mondly focuses on phrases and not individual words. The purpose is to form common sentences early to improve conversation skills. You can put this into practice using the chatbot feature. I found this with Spanish, where they taught useful conversational expressions.

Effectiveness for Different Skill Levels

Mondly is ideal for beginner and strong intermediate levels. This makes sense—as a language teacher, I understand that needs and methods change as you progress.

Mondly Grammar

A language learning app is good for practising and reviewing vocabulary and grammar. However, advanced learners need more real-life communication with native speakers.

For this reason, I really enjoyed learning German on the Mondly app. The platform was easy to navigate, and the lessons were fun. As I worked through the lessons, I felt I built a strong foundation.

Mondly Review: Pros and Cons

Based on my experience over the 30+ days, here is what impressed me and what left me a little disappointed.

What I Liked: Pros of Mondly

  • Affordable Pricing: Mondly premium is a well-priced product with a significant discount on the lifetime membership.
  • User-Friendly Interface: Both web and mobile versions have a user-friendly layout with clear navigation paths.
  • Wide Range of Languages: You can learn from 41 languages, including less common ones.
  • Effective Chatbot Feature: The speech recognition feature provides pronunciation practice with AI, enhancing conversational skills.
  • Advanced Technologies: It incorporates VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) for immersive learning experiences.
  • Progress Tracking: Clear statistics and leaderboard to monitor learning progress.
  • Daily Lessons and Quizzes: Encourages consistent practice with daily lessons and weekly and monthly quizzes.
  • Authentic Language Experience: Teaches practical, local vocabulary and uses native speaker voice recordings.
  • Content: Bite-sized lessons teach relevant vocabulary and phrases focusing on communication.

What Could Be Improved: Cons of Mondly

  • Trial Version Limitation: A free account is more of a trial, prompting users to upgrade after the first lesson.
  • Lack of Advanced Content: The most advanced lessons are not very challenging, making the app less suitable for advanced learners.
  • Dependence on Additional Hardware: A VR headset is necessary to benefit from this feature. However, this is not Mondly’s primary focus; it is just an additional feature.

My Learning Experience

I had a very positive experience using the app. I was able to learn two languages simultaneously—German and Spanish—and each provided a different learning experience due to my starting level.

I felt Mondly delivered a well-rounded experience. With German, it covered all the language skills from the start. It built a base of core words and phrases with an immediate focus on conversation skills.

I found the best way to use the app was to allocate time each day to do a few lessons. The daily lesson is a good way to get you on the app each day, And it’s fun, so you usually spend much longer learning than planned.

My experience with Spanish was also positive, but as my level was higher, I didn’t learn as much. The activities were still enjoyable, and it was useful to review expressions and structures.

Community Feedback

Mondly has a big social media following, with 1.7 million followers on Facebook. The UK App Store rating on Apple is 4.7/5, with over 5.8k ratings. On Google Play Store, it’s 4.5/5, with 879k reviews.

As you can see, there is a high satisfaction rate among users. A lot of the positive comments focussed on the affordability of the app and the ease of use. Most people praised the interface and the incorporation of AR/VR technology.

From the lower ratings, the common complaints were about the free version. Other users commented that it lacked content for advanced learners.

Who Can Benefit from Mondly?

Mondly caters for different types of language learners.

Mondly Kids

Mondly Kids is great for young learners. It makes learning a language fun for children, and the app is also user-friendly. The interactive lessons are easy to understand and keep kids interested. It creates a strong foundation for future language studies.

Mondly offers special business language courses for adults and professionals. These courses are good for people who need to use a new language at work. They focus on a specific topic and vocabulary, making learning more personalised.

In summary, it doesn’t matter if you’re a kid, a student, or working. Mondly adapts its courses to make the learning relevant.

Is Mondly Worth It? Final Thoughts

Mondly is a solid choice for anyone looking to learn a new language in 2025. It stands out in the online language learning space with a user-friendly platform and engaging content.

The teaching method is effective, with a focus on practical vocabulary. It incorporates speaking practice as much as an app can, using a chatbot to create conversation scenarios.

The AR and VR options make it a fun way to learn. And having a new lesson every day keeps content fresh and engaging.

Taking everything in my Mondly review into account, I rate Mondly as Highly Recommended at 4.5/5.
